Frequently asked questions
Your questions about EMDR therapy intensives answered. Learn more about the process, benefits, and who can benefit from this accelerated approach to healing.
What are the most common questions people ask you about EMDR therapy intensives?
Clients want to know who I am and my experience with this work. I've been in the mental health field for a long time and have been in private practice over 10 years. I have been trained in EMDR since 2019 and am now a Certified EMDR Therapist & Approved EMDR Consultant. I am also trained specifically in EMDR Intensives.
What specific benefits do clients experience from EMDR therapy intensives that they might not get from traditional therapy?
Clients can go very deeply into their healing when they dedicate the time, effort and investment involved in an immersive program. You can experience significant relief in a relatively short period of time and with fewer disruptions. Benefits include accelerated emotional healing, enhanced coping skills, reduced somatic issues and overall improved self esteem. There are no guarantees with this process. However you may experience the benefits of months of therapy in just days with this Intensive approach.
What are the biggest concerns or hesitations people have before trying EMDR therapy intensives?
Some clients may have concerns about EMDR intensives, especially if they've had previous experiences where EMDR therapy wasn't effective. It's possible that the previous therapist was a beginner in this area or lacked specialization with their particular concerns. Often times I find that there was also insufficient preparation done beforehand.
Other clients may have the assumption that EMDR needs to be very intense and painful in order to work. This is simply not true and I have a gentle and thorough approach with all of the phases involved. This is to ensure a much smoother process that is tolerable yet effective. Preparation, safety and comfort are essential for the best results.
How long do the results last?
Every client is different with how they might respond to this kind of therapy. However overall you should expect to feel some lasting change from the work that we do together. Often times the clients report feeling improvements in their symptoms, shifts in how they feel about the past painful events as well as the old negative beliefs that they have had about themselves.
What kind of person benefits the most from this type of therapy?
My intensives are offered for new clients only. I work with people from all walks of life. Clients come for all different reasons including relationship & attachment issues, depression, anxiety, addictions, recovering from painful events, complex trauma and more. What they all have in common is that they feel stuck in their life today with things that happened in the past. I help people get unstuck and address any obstacles to feeling whole again.
Can I do an intensive in addition to seeing my primary therapist?
Yes, you can do an intensive to work on specific issues, then return to your primary therapist. At the pre-assessment we can discuss a plan for the type of intensive format that is best for you.
What should I expect?
The first step is the consultation call so that I can understand your situation and needs better. Then we have a more extensive pre-treatment assessment and planning session. This can be done in Florida online or in person. EMDR has 8 phases to it and a preparation phase is involved. I'll be explaining the entire process in detail as we navigate the work together.
Then we meet for the intensive session where we will first focus on preparation exercises to ground you before reprocessing your memories and negative beliefs. We end the intensive session with stabilization exercises for closure.
After the intensive it is strongly recommended that you schedule some downtime. Check in and integration after the intensive is also a very important element. At this post-intensive session I will make sure you have the tools needed to maintain progress and will make other recommendations as well for your care.
Aftercare
Prioritizing time for rest and self care will be important for your nervous system. Your brain and body may be tired after the experience and need time to relax. You may notice thoughts, feelings, memories, sensations and vivid dreaming after the experience. You may experience some discomfort but you may also feel relief and joy immediately after the Intensive. Giving yourself space to feel everything is helpful. You may choose to share your experience with a loved one or journal about the experience to further integrate the journey.
Considerations for scheduling
I am licensed in the state of Florida and can only do the intensive session with clients who are physically in Florida. So you can enjoy the beach and get some relaxation in while you dedicate time for your healing.
